Bigfoot is a general term used to describe a specific type of cryptid colloquially known as a Sasquatch. They have become popularized in folklore in the North American regions of Canada and the northern United States. Most reports of alleged Bigfoot sightings appear to take place in regions surrounding the Pacific Northwest.

Sasquatches are often characterized as being over-sized bipedal humanoids with physical characteristics similar to that of a neanderthal. They are tall, massive creatures completely covered in hair and may possess some simian-like facial features.

The name "Bigfoot" is derived from evidence found of footprints in the forest of a large over-sized creature.

Sasquatches have appeared in nearly every form of speculative fiction, ranging from films, to television, to comic books, etc.

Bigfoot and Wildboy[]

Bigfoot is the name given to a fictional Sasquatch featured in the 1970s live-action children's adventure series Bigfoot and Wildboy. This series was originally produced as eight two-part mini-episodes that were packaged as part of The Krofft Supershow programming schedule. It was expanded into its own thirty-minute Saturday morning show that aired on ABC from June-August, 1979. The role of Bigfoot was played by actor Ray Young. He first appeared in the two-part episode "The Sonic Projector" in September, 1977.

Bigfoot was a massive hairy giant that lived in the Pacific Northwest. Sometime around 1969 or 1970, he discovered a young orphaned boy. Bigfoot took the lad under his wing, and raised him as his friend. The child eventually took the name Wildboy. Bigfoot taught Wildboy everything he needed to know to survive in the wild. He also taught him his own rudimentary language, which appeared to have been derived from some form of Native American dialect. Bigfoot also had a strong affinity for wildlife, and demonstrated empathy and the ability to communicate with various animals, such as foxes and raccoons.

Bionic Bigfoot[]

Bigfoot, sometimes referred to as Bionic Bigfoot, is a fictional Sasquatch and a recurring antagonist featured in the ABC television series The Six Million Dollar Man, as well as its spin-off series The Bionic Woman. Originally played by professional wrestler André the Giant, he was introduced in the season three episode of the The Six Million Dollar Man, "The Secret of Bigfoot (Part 1)". In later episodes, Bigfoot was portrayed by The Addams Family actor Ted Cassidy, best known for playing Lurch on that series.

Monster Truck[]

"Bigfoot" is also the name attributed to a Monster Truck. The original Bigfoot was produced in 1974 and was a For F-250 pick-up owned by Bob Chandler. Chandler made extensive modifications on the vehicle and by 1979 it was classified as being the first "Monster Truck". Still considered the most famous of such vehicles, Bigfoot has participated in vehicle sporting events like Monster Jam since the early 1980s and continues to do so to this day. To date, there have been over twenty-one models of monster trucks to carry the name "Bigfoot".

Bigfoot even received its own animated series called Bigfoot and the Muscle Machines, which was produced by Sunbow Productions and aired as nine mini-episodes with six-minute running times in 1985. It was packaged as part of the Super Saturday and Super Sunday cartoon blocks.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • A similar cryptid of note is the Yeti. Yetis, also known as Abominable Snowmen, are Sasquatch-like creatures that are believed to have been sighted in areas of the Himalayas.
  • Classically, Sasquatches are known to emit a strong and unpleasant odor to drive off predators.
  • On April 1st, 1969, it was declared in Skamania, Washington, that killing a Bigfoot was a Federal offense. It was not an April Fool's Day joke.
