Checkmate is a fictional government organization featured in the licensed properties of DC Comics. They are a sooper-secret watchdog group that engages in various international exploits with the intent of safeguarding American interests. They have been featured in the DC Animated Universe licensed works as well as the CW Network television series Smallville.
The upper echelon of Checkmate members assume code names based upon the pieces of a chess board.
