Comedy is one of the primary genres used in fictional television entertainment. It's primary focus is light-hearted humor aimed at making it's target audience laugh. The most common format of comedic television is the situation comedy, or sitcom, for short. Sitcoms are generally only thirty minutes long, are self-contained episodes and include numerous jokes and pratfalls involving the main characters.

In more recent years a hybrid form of television entertainment, colloquially referred to as the dramedy has come into fashion. Dramadies are TV shows with a dramatic theme or undercurrent with a tone that is elevated with doses of comedy. The USA Network television series Psych is a fine example of a dramedy.
