Doctor is a title attributed to an individual who has received a doctorate degree in either a research or professional level industry. In most cases, people who have earned doctorates work in the medical profession, but this is not an all-inclusive industry for someone holding the title. People may also possess a doctorate in the academics profession, philosophy or in any number of applied sciences. A Doctor of Philosophy is referred to as holding a Ph.D. A Ph.D is a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities.
In television fiction, doctors are most commonly seen in medical dramas as well as the more recent trend of forensics science investigative programs such as Bones, CSI and NCIS. In TV shows of the western genre, doctors are often referred to by the shortened title "Doc".
Of course there are situations where an individual may be addressed as a doctor, but not really have a doctorate in any legally recognized fashion. The most infamous example of this is the enigmatic Time Lord colloquially known as just "The Doctor".
