Farewell to the Planet of the Apes is a television movie that aired on CBS in April, 1981. The movie is a packaging of two episodes of the Planet of the Apes television series, which includes "Tomorrow's Tide" and the series finale, "Up Above the World So High". The film is narrated by Roddy McDowall, reprising the role of his on-screen character Galen. The narrative shows Galen as an elderly ape, indicating that he has lived a long and fruitful life. As an epilogue to the series, Galen tells the viewer that Virdon and Burke had "found their computer in another city and disappeared into space as suddenly as they’d arrived", presumably returning to their own time era.
"Tomorrow's Tide" is the sixth episode of season one of the science fiction action television series Planet of the Apes, which is loosely based on the popular 1960s film series produced by Arthur P. Jacobs. The episode was directed by Don McDougall and written by Robert W. Lenski. It first aired on CBS on Friday, October 18th, 1974.
In this episode, Alan Virdon and Pete Burke are captured by a human overseer of a fishing colony named Hurton, who uses humans as slave labor. Failure to do a good job results in being sacrificed to the Great Gods of the Sea - quite namely, sharks!
"Up Above the World So High" is the fourteenth and final episode of the Planet of the Apes. It was directed by John Meredyth Lucas and written by Arthur Browne, Jr. and S. Bar-David, who also wrote the story treatment for the episode. It first aired on CBS on Friday, December 6th, 1974.
In this episode, Alan, Pete and Galen discover a human named Leuric who has invented a rudimentary glider. They volunteer to help Leuric improve his design, but before long, Leuric is captured by gorillas and brought to the attention of an inquisitive chimpanzee scientist named Carsia. Alan and Pete build a better glider and Galen tests it out becoming the planet's first flying chimpanzee.
