The Democratic Republic of the Congo, sometimes referred to simply as the Congo, is a landlocked nation located in central Africa. From 1965 to 1997, it included the nation state known as the Republic of Zaire. In the 19th century, during British colonial occupation, it was known as the Belgian Congo.

On the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, the character of Sir Malcolm Murray had spent most of his adult life in Africa. As an explorer and hunter, he spent a great deal of time in the Belgian Congo, and even discovered a mountain; not the tallest mountain in Africa, by his account, but not the smallest one either. [1]
