Supernatural fantasy is a type of episodic storytelling that includes elements of the paranormal or the supernatural within a dramatic setting. It is a subgenre of the fantasy genre and often blends elements of the horror genre as well. Shows of the supernatural fantasy genre often spotlight fictional creatures and races such as vampires, witches, werewolves, demons and ghosts. Supernatural fantasy programs grew in popularity during the 1990s with shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. The trend continued to surge throughout the 2000s and included milder forms of paranormal storytelling with shows like Medium and Ghost Whisperer. The TV series Supernatural incorporates strong elements of the horror genre, but also balances it with action as well as some light humor.
