True Blood 1x02 002

Dawn Green from True Blood.

Waitresses are individuals who serve food and drink as their professional occupation. Male food servers are often referred to as waiters, while female food servers are called... wait for it... yes, waitresses. Food servers are usually employed by any eatery licensed to prepare and serve food to the general public including restaurants, diners, fast food establishments, buffets and even catered events. In the United States as well as several other countries, food servers generally receive a small wage for their efforts, with the bulk of their income being generated through tips. The acceptible allowance for tipping can be anywhere from 15 to 18% depending upon the level of service.

One of the more enduring televison programs focusing on food servers was the situation comedy series Alice, which aired on CBS from 1976 to 1985. The setting of the show was the fictional Mel's Diner, which was located off of an unidentified highway in Phoenix, Arizona. The main character from the series, Alice Hyatt, worked as a waitress for Mel Sharples at the diner and befriended her co-workers, sassy Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry, whose trademarks include chewing gum and shouting "Kiss my grits!" and ditzy Vera Louise Gorman. Flo eventually left the diner to return to her home town of Texas and was replaced by Isabelle "Belle" Dupree. She too was eventually replaced by truck driver-turned-reluctant waitress Jolene Hunnicutt.

On the CW Network television series The Vampire Diaries, one of the principal settings for the show is an eatery called the Mystic Grill. A woman named Vicki Donovan worked there as a waitress.

Another TV series that focused on food servers is the 2011 comedy series 2 Broke Girls starring Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs. The series took place at the Williamsburg Diner in Brooklyn, New York and was managed by a short Korean man named Han Lee. The two main characters, Max Black and Caroline Channing, worked at the diner as waitresses. Max was scrappy and street smart with an unending supply of cynical, sarcastic quips. Caroline, a former heiress was forced to accept a job at the diner to make ends meet after her assets were frozen due to a scandal involving her father's management of his holdings.
